Sri Lanka is famous for rice and curry, delicious meat, fish and various vegetables cooked with spices and serves with rice. Kottu is also very famous (served only for dinner) and consist of chopped roti cooked on a hot plate with spices, vegetables and meat (or eggs).
Snacks are widely available and include delicious stuffed rolls, with meat and fish.
The food in Sri Lanka is spicy and even the locals are known to find it so. If you don’t want spicy food, just ask for “non-spicy” or ‘little, little spice’ when you order.
String Hoopers (rice noodles) and Kiri hodi (breakfast curry) is the most delicious Sri Lanka breakfast, if you would like to try this you often have to order the day before but it is well worth it.
Chicken is the main meat available. Pork is almost non-existent in Sri Lanka and Beef is only available in the tourist restaurants. There is an abundance of fresh fish which is often been caught that day and you will also find a lot of vegetarian food.
The cost of eating out varies hugely. You can find find wonderful cafes and restaurants that offer extremely cheap and tasty food as well as higher end market restaurants.
